Classroom Assistant

Overview
Reporting to the Head, Toddler & Children’s House; the Classroom Assistant is responsible for supporting the students and teachers to run an efficient classroom during the academic day.

 

Responsibilities

  • Preparing the environment to welcome students; for example, checking supplies and activities are available for students, shelves in order, removing chairs from tables, preparing snack, replenishing art supplies, etc.
  • Welcoming students
  • Completing attendance and wellness checks upon arrival, contributing to daily toileting, food consumption and nap logs throughout the day
  • Assisting students with toileting, dressing and undressing, obtaining materials, snack and lunch acquisition, etc.
  • Maintenance of the classroom throughout the day to ensure it is safe and welcoming for all; for example, keeping the floors free of debris or wet, wiping and sanitizing tables and materials, replenishing materials on the shelves and in art activities.
  • Support children emotionally; for example, during separation from parent/guardian, transition to sleep, during conflict with a classmate, transition to the outdoors or back inside the school, during toileting, etc.
  • Continuous monitoring of the environment to ensure the safety of the children, especially when Montessori teachers are conducting lessons. Guide and intervene based on observations and needs.
  • Participation in circles
  • Playground supervision
  • Preparation of arts and crafts (cost of supplies provided by Lauremont School) and preparation should only occur during working hours
  • Preparation of the environment for different needs; for example, cot placement for nap and sanitizing of cots after nap
  • Dishes and Laundry daily
  • Completion and submission of accident report if accident occurs during individual’s supervision
  • Appropriate communication with parents at arrival and dismissal. Inform team members of any pertinent information received or provided.
  • Ensure the classroom is cleaned at the end of the day and ready to receive children in the morning (dishes washed, laundry completed, tables and chairs cleaned, materials sanitized, cubbies maintained and supplies replenished). These duties are performed by teachers and both Assistants until 4 pm.
  • GMR prepared for evening cleaning: mats removed; water table emptied and sanitized; water and sand toys washed and sanitized; balls sanitized; sand swept and discarded
  • Once per week, playground materials sanitized

The Classroom Assistant is:

  • A self-motivated team player with a passion for working with children.
  • An advocate for and committed to the protection of the rights of each child and recognizes, as well as accepts, the unique qualities of each child; recognizes that he/she is a role model for children and, as such, must model exemplary behaviour at all times.
  • Able to communicate openly and effectively with all team members by sharing thoughts and observations about the children and the classroom environment.
  • A professional committed to being present at work on all required work days in order to provide the consistency needed by each child.
  • Demonstrates respect for differences in each child and adult encountered in the working environment.
  • Committed to assisting in ensuring the children and colleagues have the freedom and opportunity to develop to their full potential.

 

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year’s experience working with young children.
  • Montessori training for Assistants and/or RECE are preferred.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft word, email, Excel, research on the internet, etc.
  • Demonstrates a passion for working with children in a team teaching environment.
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivated, and within a team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills, with the ability to be flexible.
  • Punctual, reliable and consistent attendance.
  • A desire to learn about Montessori pedagogy.
  • A current Vulnerable Sector Check Police Record Check
  • Current Standard CPR, First Aid and AED Training
