At the recent Montessori Europe Congress in Riga, Latvia, Rachel Marks (Deputy Head of School) and Andrea Ng-Willis (Director of Academics, Elementary) had the opportunity to gather with educators, researchers and school leaders from across the globe, all committed to advancing Montessori education in ways that are both authentic and responsive to a changing world. The environment was rich in professional dialogue, academic exchange and a shared sense of purpose.

Through their workshop, Students as Agents of Change, Rachel and Andrea showcased how Lauremont School is bridging the gap between Montessori philosophy and social innovation. They highlighted how Montessori education, through core principles such as independence, curiosity, responsibility and respect, serves as a strong foundation for cultivating students who are capable of thoughtful and meaningful action. The presentation invited participants to consider how learning can move beyond understanding concepts toward empowering students to actively shape their communities and the world around them.

The theme of this year’s Congress, The Courage to Trust, offers a powerful reminder of the balance required in education, the courage to explore new possibilities and the trust in students as changemakers. Montessori’s core principles cultivate critical thinking, adaptability and collaboration skills through meaningful, real-world projects. In an increasingly complex world, this approach provides a strong foundation not only for academic growth, but most importantly for nurturing purpose, responsibility, and a commitment to meaningful social impact.
