Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow
Lower School
Upper School
At Lauremont, leadership development begins early on, with students at the Lower School actively encouraged to take on roles that will help build their confidence. Starting in Children’s House, our older students often give lessons to younger classmates or read to small groups, helping to develop leadership and collaboration skills. In the Elementary program, Grade 3 students are given more opportunities to mentor peers and collaborate on school-wide initiatives. By Grade 6, students continue helping their peers while also stepping into more formal leadership roles through the Ambassador and Student Council programs. As Student Ambassadors, students will help lead tours for prospective families, assist with parent workshops and represent the school during official events.
The Student Council also plays a vital role in the Lower School. Grade 6 students engage with younger peers as Reading Buddies. Through initiatives like the “We Play Together” program, Student Council members ensure everyone feels seen, heard and included, fostering an environment where every student feels valued.
As students take on increasing responsibilities within the classroom and beyond, they grow into confident leaders prepared to make a positive impact both within the school and in the broader community.
Leadership at the Upper School is accomplished through a blend of academic and non-academic experiences. With the IB’s emphasis on the “service as action” initiative, students will explore global issues, raise awareness and collaborate to effect positive change. Upper School students have the opportunity to take the lead in various student-led clubs, driven by Lauremont School’s four pillars, Academics, Arts, Athletics and Citizenship. Students are also enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program, where they will develop their skills in citizenship and leadership. Additionally, the Lauremont School Schulich Experience for Grades 9 and 10 empowers students’ collaborative and leadership skills while connecting in-class learning to sustainable social change.
Leadership opportunities are also available through the school’s student governance structure. The Senior Student Council, open to students from Grade 10 onward, and the Junior Student Council, for Grades 7 to 9, provide key opportunities for student leadership. Through these councils, students can organize events, raise funds and take on significant roles within the school. The selection process for the Senior Student Council is democratic and involves a thorough application process, including meeting behavioural expectations, teacher references and receiving peer support during the voting process. Through the vast experiences and opportunities available to them, students can develop leadership skills that will serve them well beyond their years at Lauremont School.
