Our Pillars
Academics at Lauremont School
Lauremont School is renowned for its exceptional learning environment, combining the best of Montessori and International Baccalaureate (IB) educational philosophies. From our youngest learners to our accomplished alumni, students are deeply engaged in their academic pursuits and dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. This dual approach nurtures not only academic excellence but also personal growth, equipping students with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a complex, interconnected world.
Toddler
In the Toddler program, children are introduced to the Montessori program, which is ideal for fostering their budding sense of identity and self-awareness. At this crucial developmental stage, students engage in activities and use materials that support independence, motor skills, and language acquisition. Daily direct lessons and exploration help toddlers build a strong foundation for the advanced academic standards of our Children’s House program.
Our Montessori approach emphasizes self-directed learning, hands-on activities, and collaborative play. Under the guidance of our teachers, toddlers learn through observation and interaction, setting the stage for a lifelong enthusiasm for learning. Activities such as sorting, matching, and language games are designed to stimulate cognitive development and fine motor skills. By fostering a love of learning and curiosity from an early age, we prepare our toddlers for a seamless transition into the next phase of their education.
Children’s House
The Children’s House program at Lauremont School provides a robust foundation across five key areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, and Culture. Students receive individualized lessons with the Montessori materials, offering a multi-sensory understanding of core concepts. This approach encourages exploration, reinforces key skills of the child’s development.
By following the Montessori philosophy of respecting each child’s unique learning path, we empower students to realize their full potential. Our spacious classrooms and diverse materials facilitate a dynamic learning environment where children develop critical thinking, independence, and a deep sense of responsibility. Practical Life activities, such as pouring, buttoning, and gardening, enhance fine motor skills and self-care abilities. Sensorial materials, like colour tablets and geometric solids, refine their sensory perception and cognitive skills.
Language and math curricula are designed to build foundational skills through phonetic awareness, writing, counting, and problem-solving activities. Cultural studies introduce students to geography, history, and science, fostering a global perspective and curiosity about the world. These experiences prepare them for the more rigorous academic challenges of our Elementary programme, ensuring a smooth and confident transition.
Elementary
Lauremont’s Elementary Program continues to build on the Montessori principles, tailoring education to each student’s interests and passions to foster deeper learning. This highly academic program emphasizes inquiry, innovation, and integration across all subjects. Students are taught to adopt a growth mindset, embracing challenges with the understanding that perseverance leads to success.
Our curriculum connects subjects like math, language, history, and science to real-world applications, enhancing both understanding and global awareness. For instance, students might explore mathematical concepts through architecture projects or learn about historical events through literature and drama. Leadership is nurtured through peer role-modeling and mentoring in mixed-age classes, encouraging risk-taking and learning from mistakes.
When students reach Grade 6, they leave the Lower School with a solid foundation of academic skills that prepare them for entering the IB Middle Years Programme in Grade 7 at the Upper School. By fostering resilience, creativity, and critical thinking, we ensure that our students are well-prepared for the ever-changing modern world.
Upper School
At the Upper School, students continue their academic journey within the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. This globally recognized, academically rigorous program is aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum, enabling students to earn both their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and IB Diplomas: Middle Years Programme (Grades 7-10) and Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12).
The IB programme at Lauremont offers a wide array of subjects, including core disciplines such as English, humanities, math, and science, along with design, languages, music, physical education, and art. Students develop advanced research skills, engage in comprehensive studies across multiple disciplines, and refine their public speaking skills. Emphasis is placed on understanding the global context of their studies, developing critical thinking, and preparing students for university and beyond.
Graduates of Lauremont’s Upper School are well-equipped for acceptance into competitive programs at leading universities worldwide, ready to excel and contribute meaningfully to society. Our comprehensive approach ensures that students not only achieve academic excellence but also develop the character and skills necessary to become compassionate, innovative leaders in an ever-changing world.
